'T GROM Garden and Storytelling, Adela Hankus, Thomas More Mechelen

The assignment was to revive the vegetable museum 't Grom in Mechelen. Adela approached her project from a service design point of view. This transcends the building, the environment or products in the museum. It shows that non-material elements can also make a difference when it comes to accessibility. She designed a kind of visual roadmap in the form of a children's novel: Lea's adventures in 't Grom. Inspired by Alice's Adventures inWonderland, the book tells a story thatcan be considered as a journey or roadmap through the site of the vegetable museum. This booklet gives everyone, including specific target groups such as children or people with autism, an insight into all the practical information, how the museum works, what to do etc.

UD supermarket, Axelle Hemels, UAntwerpen

A supermarket is an essential need. It is one of the most common places we go to get our daily products such as food, drinks and personal hygiene. Although this is a basic need, many customers have a limited access to and use of the supermarket, due to inaccessible interior design. Based on the plans of a supermarket in Antwerp, and many conversations with people with various disabilities, Axelle, an interior design student at the UAntwerp, has designed a UD-supermarket that is pleasant and usable by everyone. It is a good designed interior plan that takes many needs into account. The jury wonders what the economic feasibility is within the efficiency of modern supermarket chains in terms of yield per m². We sincerely hope that the large supermarket chains will look at, research and eventually apply the many ideas from this design. It is a good designed interior plan that takes many needs into account.

EONE HOUSE, Dominika Klopotek - Lukasz Maciorowski, Universiteit Hasselt

"A design isn’t finished until everyone can use it."

“A design isn't finished until everyone can use it.” Dominika and Lukasz, (international exchange) architecture students at UHasselt, designed a beautiful and accessible home. This project meets an important criteria of Universal Design: items that look beautiful and designed instead of practical and medical. This beautiful design interior contains some beautifully designed interior items. A concern of the jury is that the total project is an expensive design house that is probably not affordable for many. We hope that many ideas from this project can also be developed as affordable design.

Reform To Mutualism, Gustavo Machado Majewski - Hillevi Niksson, Bergen School of Architecture

MOBE, Thomas De Roeck - Margot Fonteyn, UAntwerpen

MOBE is a design by two product design students of the U Antwerp Thomas and Margot. This is the only product design in the competition that offers a solution to a medical problem, but also has great potential for use by a wider audience. Mobe is a type of clothing with 3D body motion tracking. It registers your movements and allows you to analyse them. This makes the product interesting for people who are rehabilitating. But also for athletes, for example runners who want to analyze the way they run or golfers who want to optimize their swing. The accompanying app generates feedback, graphs and statistics.

Deze projecten kregen een eervolle vermelding. - These projects received an honorable mention.

Mana

The jury applauds the idea of Fien and Amber, 2 students of product design from U Antwerp. Making feeding aids more aesthetically pleasing is a very good aim. If they had managed to fit this solution in a mainstream backpack, it would have been more suitable for this UD design competition. In addition, the jury mainly had questions about the safety of this design, the loose tubes at the back, and the very accessible central zipper for pickpockets.

Sugi

This solution from Severine and Nick, 2 product design students of the U Antwerp, is not a functional but rather an empathic solution. Congratulations for their design that breaks stigma, which is very important and much needed in our present society. The concept is unfortunately too light for this design competition that aims for Universal Design solutions. The jury applauds their approach and the fact that they turned around their concept after user consultation.
